How to enroll in a CITI course for the first time:

You may login if you have already registered, but if this is your first time at the CITI Course website, you must register for your courses.

How to Register:

From the CITI Home Page, choose "Register" in the upper right

1. Choose your institutional affiliation. (Maine Medical Center)

2. Create a Username and Password.

3. Provide contact information required by your institution.

4. You will be given the opportunity to register with another  institution. This is a handy option as you will not be required to complete the same modules required by both institutions more than once.

5. Answer one or more questions about your research focus or research role and the software will present you with the appropriate customized curriculum.  Required courses are listed below.

6. After you select the curriculum, the software will present you with the "Learners Main Menu."

7. You will click on the "Enter" link to open the course.

8. The modules will be displayed.

Biosafety and Biosecurity Course Catalog (CITI IBC Program)

The IBC course catalog provides descriptions of each course within the BSS series and the specific modules that make up each course.

Course Listings:

  • PI's must take the following courses:

    1. Emergency and Incident Response to Biohazard Spills and Releases

    2. Basic Biosafety Training (Training for Investigators, Staff and Students Handling Biohazards)

  • All lab personnel, staff, and students must take the following courses:

    1. Introduction to Biosafety

    2. Basic Biosafety Training (Training for Investigators, Staff and Students Handling Biohazards)

  •  All IBC members must take the following course:

    1. NIH Recombinant DNA (rDNA) Guidelines Gradebook

All principal investigators, staff, lab personnel, and new personnel are required to complete the online CITI training before approval of any proposal is granted by the IBC. It is the responsibility of the principal investigators to ensure that all personnel listed on their application have completed the training prior to submission. Approval will not be granted until all personnel listed on the application have completed this training. 

IBC policy requires all principal investigators, staff, lab personnel, and new personnel to retake the online CITI training every 3 years. IBC approvals will not be granted until expired CITI training has been completed.
