Who is required to complete the training?
Principal investigators, their staff and any other individuals or personnel who are working on research which requires the submission of an IBC application and approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), will need to complete the CITI online training. IBC members are also required to complete CITI online training.
When do I have to complete the training
All principal investigators, staff, lab personnel, and new personnel are required to complete the online CITI training before approval of any proposal is granted by the IBC. It is the responsibility of the principal investigators to ensure that all personnel listed on their application have completed the training prior to submission. Approval will not be granted until all personnel listed on the application have completed this training.
March 1st is the deadline for all PI's and their staff who are holding IBC protocols to complete the IBC training.
The IBC policy requires all principal investigators, staff, lab personnel, and new personnel to retake the online CITI training every 3 years. IBC approvals will not be granted until expired CITI training has been completed.

Do I have to complete all of the modules at one time?
No. The software will keep tract of your progress and keep track of the quizzes that you have completed. When you re-enter the site, click on the appropriate link from your Learner Menu and return to the menu of modules. We recommend viewing the entire course and taking the self assessment quizzes at the end of every chapter, as you will need a grade of 85 to pass the exam. To skip the course, Click on "Exam" instead of "Course".
How long will it take to complete the course?
Each module should take no longer than 30 minutes, or approximately 1-2 hours to complete the entire IBC on-line training.
Who do I contact if I have a question?
Please call the Research Compliance Office at 207-396-8183. The Maine Medical Center CITI Coordinators are on staff in the Research Compliance Office. Complete the quizzes as you complete each module. After you have completed all of the required modules, a completion report will be sent to your CITI coordinator. Once the Research Compliance Office receives notice of completion of the course, they will mail a certificate of completion to you for your records.
