The Maine Medical Center is committed to providing continuing medical
education and research opportunities for our medical staff and trainees.
These opportunities include formal coursework, participation in clinical
and basic research seminars, and involvement in ongoing clinical or
basic research projects.
Courses and Seminar Series
The
Center for Molecular
Medicine at the
Maine Medical Center Research Institute host a weekly seminar
series with internationally renowned research scientists
in the biomedical sciences. Everyone is welcome to attend these seminars,
and continuing education credits are offered for attendance.
Weekly one-hour departmental Grand Rounds occur in the Dana Education
Center at Maine Medical Center for the departments of Emergency Medicine,
Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Medicine, OB/Gyn, Pediatrics, Psychiatry,
Social Work and Surgery. Grand Rounds include research presentations,
journal clubs, current disease controversies, clinical roundtables,
new therapeutic approaches, conferences, and presentations of clinical
syndromes. Category 1 CMEs are available for Grand Rounds participants.
Research Projects
The Maine Medical Center Research Institute is composed of basic and
clinical research laboratories that support the research training of
professionals (physicians), medical trainees (residents, medical students),
scientists, and scientists-in-training (postdoctoral fellows, graduate
students, and undergraduate students). Examples of these opportunities
include our Summer Student Research Program,
International Medical Student Research
Internships, and Postdoctoral
Fellowships.
The Mentored Research Committee offers competitive grant awards to support
trainee research projects.
Participants in research projects are encouraged to present the results
of their research to the Maine Medical Center community and at national
meetings. The Annual Maine Medical Center Research Forum takes place
during a week in April. During that week, Grand Rounds are dedicated
to research presentations by basic scientists, faculty and trainees.
In addition, there are Poster and Plenary Sessions. Residents, Fellows,
Post-graduate and Graduate students representing all departments present
their research work at the Plenary Session. Presentations are scored
by a team of 6, with a travel award for the best presentation.
