The Maine
Medical Center Research Institiute participates in three Ph.D. programs:
In cooperation
with the University of Maine, Orono, and the Jackson Laboratory, these
programs have been established to provide rigorous basic research
training in interdisciplinary areas. Applications for both programs
are reviewed yearly in February. Upon matriculation into the program,
students spend the first academic year performing rotations through
laboratories at any of the cooperating Institutions. Once a mentor
is identified, the student will join that laboratory and set up a
thesis project under the guidance of their thesis Mentor and a Thesis
Committee consisting of an addition 4 participating faculty. Successful
completion of written and oral comprehensive examinations, usually
by the end of the second year, is required for candidacy.
