Dr. John Devlin received his Bachelors degree from LeHigh University, and graduated from Cornell University Medical College. After completing his Internal Medicine residency at Maine Medical Center, he served for 2 years in the U.S. Public Health Service in Eastport, Maine. He completed an NIH-sponsored fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Vermont, followed by a tenured-track faculty position as Associate Professor. His primary research interest is the effects of exercise in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and he has edited several books and written numerous peer-reviewed articles on this and other subjects. He is a past Chair of the American Diabetes Association Council on Exercise. He recently left his position as Medical Director at the Maine Center for Diabetes to provide more time to conduct clinical research at CORE, and to devote time to improving inpatient care for diabetic patients at Maine Medical Center and other MaineHealth hospitals. He serves as the Medical Director for the Mercy Hospital Diabetes Center, and is a consultant to Maine General Medical Center and the Togus VAMC. His current research focus is on promoting physical activity for the prevention and treatment of chronic metabolic diseases, in particular diabetes mellitus. Dr. Devlin is particularly interested in targeting interventions in vulnerable populations at high risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Devlin has received support from a MMC RSP grant to examine the attitudes and perceived barriers to exercise in the Somali immigrant population and has submitted a research proposal to promote physical activity in a rural Maine population as part of the COBRE research grant application.
