I was selected into the 7-year Program in Medicine at Brown  University.  I subsequently did an internal medicine residency at the George Washington University Medical Center and was selected as Chief Resident.  Following residency I trained in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and joined the faculty there for 3 years as the Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Program.  In 1999 I came to Maine Medical Center to join Chest Medicine Associates and Direct the Adult CF Program here.  I currently sit on the national study section for CF Clinical Research.  I am also a steering committee member of the Northern New England CF Consortium, a regional, group of health care professionals who seek to continuously improve the quality of medical care of cystic fibrosis patients.

Research Interests

While at the University of Pennsylvania, I was a member of the Institute for Human Gene Therapy and was Principal Investigator on an NIH- funded clinical trial of gene therapy for treatment of CF lung disease.  I also had funding through the CF Foundation, Veterans’ Administration and the American Lung Association for research on ion transport, focusing particularly on interactions between sodium channels, chloride channels and cytoskeletal elements in epithelial cells.  More recently, I have focused on clinical research related to improving care of patients with CF.  I am Principal Investigator on a CF Foundation-funded multicenter project involving 6 medical centers on the East Coast to study patterns of bacterial shedding by CF patients in outpatient facilities.  I am also currently working on a collaborative project with faculty at Bates College and Dartmouth College to mathematically model intermediate-term survival by attained age of CF patients using data from the CF Foundation national registry.
