Biosketch

Dr. Vella comes from Ireland where he received his medical degree and doctoral thesis from the National University of Ireland and was licensed by the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons. His Internship was spent at Beaumont Hospital, in Dublin, and his Residency at Boston City Hospital. In 1998 he completed a research Fellowship in Transplantation Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School, and in 1999 a clinical Fellowship in the Renal Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He was awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2002, and the American College of Physicians in 2003. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont School of Medicine and on the Faculty in the Dept. of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, at the University of Maine. He is an Attending Physician in the Division of Nephrology, Maine Medical Center, and the Medical Director of Renal Transplantation at the Maine Transplant Program in Portland, ME. He serves as an Associate Editor, NephSAP (Transplantation), the Chairman, Medical Advisory Board, National Kidney Foundation, and on the Editorial Board of Faculty of 1000, Transplantation. In addition, he is Chairman of the Patient Education Committee of the American Society of Transplantation.

Research Interests

Dr. Vella’s research interests include immunosuppression in the management of renal allograft recipients, the role and mechanisms of indirect allorecognition in allograft rejection, cytokines post transplantation, and most recently mechanisms of allograft fibrosis. He is involved in a number of clinical projects including optimizing Prograf therapy in maintenance allografts, lowering total homocysteine in patients with chronic renal disease to reduce excess incidence of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease outcomes, and developing predictive immunological assays that permit tailored immunosuppression and enhanced allograft survival as well as reduced transplant recipient morbidity and mortality.
